The Times of Northwest Indiana (NWI - Times) is the official newspaper of Valparaiso County, Indiana, the state of Indiana and the United States since 1906.

The site of today's Valparaiso includes the original Potawatomi settlement in the 18th century and a number of other settlements, such as the town of Portage, Indiana. In 1822 it was a thriving fur post and in 1832 the US government bought the land from the Potaw Atomis Indians. The city had its first wooden huts in 1834 and was located on the west side of Lake Michigan, north of Fort Wayne. It comprised the first post office, a church and some other buildings, as well as a small village with about 500 inhabitants.

The northern side of the commune of Valparaiso is connected by the Chiqua River to the north, which is located near the town of Chipuaw . The communities on the north side of Valparaioso are connected to the south and west sides of Lake Michigan north of Portage, Indiana.

The biggest and most historic is the Popcorn Festival, where Orville Redenbacher, who founded his popcorn empire in Valparaiso in the mid-19th century, is honoured. Other school districts are La Paz, La Palma, Valpisos, Calumet, San Jose and San Juan. Major employers in Valparaiso include the National Bank of Chile, the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the US Army Corps of Engineers. Some of the other big companies in Valparaso and other parts of Indiana are among them: Coca-Cola, Cargill, General Electric, PepsiCo and General Motors, as well as many others.

Ten of the 11 Valparaiso Community Schools received an "A" grade from Indiana's Department of Education in 2019. The surrounding school districts in Val Parc and the surrounding district are well funded, offer their students fantastic educational opportunities and are among the top 50 schools in the country. Washington Township Middle School and High School are both rated highly, with Washington Township Middle High School ranked sixth in Washington and Indiana states - best in Indiana in academic achievement.
