Valpo won the Horizon League for the first time in 2012 and advanced to the NCAA tournament, losing to Louisville in the second round. The following season, Valparaiso agreed to join the Missouri Valley Conference after 10 years as a member of the Horizon League.

The Crusaders are currently coached by Matt Lottich and will play their home games at the athletics and leisure centre. The basketball, swimming and volleyball teams play in the adjacent athletics and leisure centre (ARC), which has a capacity of 5,000 seats. When Valparaiso joined the MVC, the men's teams in swimming and tennis moved to the Summit League, and the bowling team stayed in the Southland Bowling League. The Val Parciso football team remains in the Pioneer Football League, but the football is not sponsored by the conference.

The Crusaders enjoy a home game that fills the grounds with about 75 home games and is cheered on with as much passion by the home crowd as by the big boys. Valpo games can be one of the most exciting events in the history of the school and a great experience for the fans.

In 1998, a last-second shot by Bryce Drew beat Ole Miss and propelled Valpo into the Sweet Sixteen and beat her. The Crusader Softball team repeated the title of Horizon League champions in 1999 and 2000, losing to Michigan in the NCAA Division II tournament Final Four. In 2002, the Crusaders won their only tournament game by beating Ole Mississippi with a last-second shot by Bryce Drew. After being beaten by the University of Colorado at Boulder and Colorado State University, and losing to southwestern Michigan State and the US Army Corps of Engineers, ValPo returned to the NCAA Division II tournament in 2003 and 2004 and advanced to the Elite Eight, losing in overtime to South Dakota State, West Virginia and South Carolina State.
